‘They May Not Mean To, But They Do’; an exhibition of four recent Duncan of Jordanstone graduates, who in varying ways explore themes of human understanding. Invited to exhibit in Kinblethmont Estate’s new gallery space, these young artists show a completely diverse range of medias challenging traditional gallery values.
Since graduating Alice Butterworth has spent time travelling and volunteering. Butterworth’s paintings and drawings address themes of tenderness and human comfort, with quiet sensitivity. Her work stems from the basic understandings of human observation.
Recipient of the RSA Kinross Scholarship, Katie Houston’s recent residency in Italy provides the foundations for her drawing and painting practice. A sensitive playfulness and uncomplicated humour link her material and subject matter.
Ross Hamilton Frew’s practice explores the idea of the forgotten; the discarded and the erased. Repetition of process is important in the rendering of motifs such as scribbles, lines, dots and shapes. The human error in his practice is apparent, almost flaunted.
Alexander Maciver’s new work is directly influenced by time spent in Tokyo, Berlin and a recent residency in New York. The psychology of up-bringing and adolescence, in relation to personal experience, are investigated by Maciver in his semi-autobiographical video, sculptural and painted works.
